Drive-In Racking

What Is
Drive In Racking?

A high-density pallet storage system designed for storing large volumes of similar or identical goods. Unlike conventional racking, it allows forklifts to drive directly into storage lanes to load or retrieve pallets. Each pallet rests on side-mounted rails, stacked several levels high, maximising both floor space and vertical height.

Operating on a Last-In, First-Out (LIFO) basis, drive in racking systems are ideal for bulk storage with low turnover, where space efficiency is more important than selectivity. These systems are especially popular in cold storage environments, as they reduce the amount of refrigerated airspace required — cutting energy costs while increasing capacity.

Our installations follow HSE pallet racking safety guidance for compliance and peace of mind.

Key Benefits of Drive-In Racking?

Maximise Space Efficiency

Drive in pallet racking removes the need for multiple access aisles, consolidating storage into deep lanes that can be stacked up to ten pallets deep. This format dramatically increases the number of pallet positions available in a given area — freeing up to 90% of floor space compared to traditional selective racking. It’s particularly effective in square or narrow warehouse layouts where every metre counts.

Improve Cold Store Efficiency

In chilled or frozen environments, a smaller air volume means lower energy use. By creating dense storage zones, drive in racking systems reduce the cubic space that must be refrigerated, helping to control running costs and reduce carbon output. These systems are a top choice for cold chain logistics providers, meat processing facilities, and frozen food distribution hubs.

Simplify Inventory Management

Drive through pallet racking allows each lane to be assigned to a single SKU, which makes bulk storage and retrieval faster and more organised. It’s ideal for storing seasonal stock, production runs, or high-volume items that don’t require frequent access — streamlining both replenishment and audit processes.

Safer, Guided Pallet Handling

Each racking lane is fitted with side-mounted pallet rails and entry guides that help forklifts align and position loads accurately. This reduces the likelihood of operational damage, minimises rack maintenance, and improves long-term structural integrity. Forklift operators can load and retrieve efficiently, even at height, without manoeuvring between uprights.

Adaptable to Inventory Changes

Although typically used for uniform goods, these systems can be reconfigured as your business grows. With adjustable rail heights and modular design, drive in pallet racking can adapt to new pallet types, product lines, or loading patterns — offering long-term flexibility in a cost-efficient format.
